Day 27 - Cao Dai temple and Cu Chi Tunnels

We took a tour using Sinh Tourist, a cheap tour agency that orginated from Sinh Cafe (a cheap place for backpackers to stay). The bus tour included a stop at Tay Ninh is situated 95km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City and is the original home of the Cao Dai religion followed by an afternoon at Cu Chi Tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war.

 Here's something we didn't know...

Cao Dai (a.k.a. Dao Cao Dai or Caodaism) is a syncretist Vietnamese religious movement with a strongly nationalist political character. Cao Dai draws upon ethical precepts from Confucianism, occult practices from Taoism, theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, and a hierarchical organization (including a pope) from Roman Catholicism. Its pantheon of saints includes such diverse figures as the Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Pericles, Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, and Sun Yat-sen.

The Cu Chi tunnels were a network totalling over 200 km of tunnels. The local Cu Chi people assisted the Viet Cong. The tunnels were more than just a hiding spot. They served as supply routes, hospitals, and sleeping quarters. Most frustrating for the Americans was the ability of the VC to pop up out of the ground in the heart of the US advance, shoot them and disappear back down the tunnel before they knew what hit them.

Adam new most of the guns by name
because of Call of Duty. We're so proud.

The locals deviced all kinds
of traps to kill US soldiers
Very small tunnels

The Cu Chi people would recover US bombs that didn't
detonate and use the explosives to make landmines and grenades

The tunnels have been enlarged to accomodate tourists
When used during the war, the tunnels were so small that  soldiers had to crawl on their bellies to manoeuvrearound.
